Adult Social Care

Across Essex, we support over 10,000 vulnerable older adults, mainly over the age of 70, every year.

We also support over 3,500 vulnerable adults of working age who have learning disabilities, nearly 700 adults with mental health needs and over 2,100 adults with physical impairments.

Our focus is to improve the lives of people (and their carers) who otherwise would struggle to cope. This makes the work that we do incredibly satisfying.

But we know that it is getting harder and harder to meet growing demand and the growing complexity of need. That would be the case even if our funding was not constrained.

We knew that we needed to change the way we work and we know that the earlier we can identify issues, the more likely it is we can support them to retain as much independence as possible and to live within their own homes.

By doing more earlier on to Prevent, Reduce and Delay needs from growing, we can help support people to enjoy personal health and wellbeing.

The following principles underpin our strategic approach for social care:

Prevention: we will focus on evidence-based interventions that can help to prevent avoidable demand on statutory health and care services.

Early intervention and recovery: we will proactively work with individuals, families and other agencies to help people who have experienced ill-health or crisis to recover as quickly as possible, reducing their ongoing needs and helping them return home; and work with those with disabilities and challenging behaviours to understand their needs and how they can live as independently as possible.

Enablement: we will work on the assumption that people want to be enabled and supported to live independently at home and access employment when possible, ensuring that residential and long-term care is only used when it is appropriate

Safeguarding: we will place the right of all adults to live their lives free from harm, abuse and neglect at the heart of everything we do

Our Good Lives approach is the way we implement this in our practice.

We put residents at the heart of every decision we make. That's clear in Adult Services, where we deliver Essex County Council's statutory duties for looking after vulnerable adults.  It's where we offer assessments, reviews, safeguarding and care that meet their needs – and you could add to that strength.
