Team Manager

I joined Tower Hamlets Council through the Positive Action Scheme (PAS) in 2008 as a Family Support Worker and graduated from Middlesex University in 2011 as a newly qualified Social Worker. Funded by the council, the PAS allowed me to study for my qualification and work at the same time. For those three years, until I graduated, I attended university two days a week and completed a 100-day placement each year in different teams.

After graduating I was employed by the council and have worked in several teams in Children’s Social Care, including Family Support and Protection and Looked After Children, and this has helped me get a better understanding of a child’s journey through the system.

I’m now a team manager and the support I’ve received from managers and the organisation as a whole in meeting my career development goals has been a big reason why I’ve stayed here.

Having worked at the council for almost ten years, I can say that we’ve not been at our best lately, but I also know the council is resilient and flexible enough to make the changes that we need to make to deliver an excellent service. And we’ve already started – the Children’s Social Care service has been redesigned to meet the demand for services and improve outcomes for children and families. For team members, the changes mean working in smaller teams, consistent supervision and more support.

In the past we’ve had quite a high turnover of staff in the service, but now that the changes are in place, I really do believe that staff feel more settled. The council is investing in the Children’s’ Social Care service and we’re definitely moving in the right direction.

If you want to work in a service where you have the opportunity and support to make a difference, and to develop your career, then I would definitely recommend Tower Hamlets Council. It’s a good time to join.
