Slough Borough Council

Slough is a place like nowhere else.

Small geographically but big for business, ambition and potential and with the most diverse population in the country; since the 1930s people from across the country and across the world have made Slough their home.

Drawn by the town’s industry, entrepreneurial spirit, big business and location, the people of Slough are many and varied - but cohesion is strong with people getting along well together.

Just last year, Slough was voted the best place to work in the UK, has been named the eighth most friendly small city for business in the whole of Europe and the second best connected.

Slough is better connected - by rail, by road and by air. London Paddington is just 15 minutes away by mainline rail, the M4, M25 and M40 are all within easy reach and Heathrow is on the doorstep. And with Crossrail in 2019 the city has never been closer.

About the council

Slough Borough Council (SBC) - one of the smallest unitary authorities in the country but a powerhouse of ambition for its borough and people.

With around 1,200 staff and 42 councillors the council is guided by its five year plan which lays out the organisation’s priority outcomes:

- Slough children will grow up to be happy, healthy and successful
- Our people will be healthier and manage their own care needs
- Slough will be an attractive place where people choose to live, work and stay
- Our residents will live in good quality homes
- Slough will attract, retain and grow businesses and investment to provide opportunities for our residents

The staff are engaged; the council has a thriving employee engagement forum, led by a director, with input from all departments and from all levels. They lead the annual staff conference, attended by more than 700 employees as well as ensuring staff voices are heard and listened to and their views acted on. This year the council is implementing a new corporate learning and development programme to ensure staff are up to speed and ready for all the challenges ahead. Staff are the council’s greatest asset and in Slough the council is committed to investing in them.
