Wolverhampton’s children’s social care provides care and support to some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the City. The work we undertake is both challenging and rewarding. Everyone who works within our social care service plays a role in making a difference to the lives of Wolverhampton’s children, young people and their families.
We believe that the children of our City are entitled to grow up in safe, caring environments either in their own families or where this is not possible in the best possible alternative. We believe that our children and young people deserve the opportunity to live and achieve to their full potential. To ensure this, we are constantly looking at how we deliver services and how we do things to make sure they fully meet the needs of children, young people and families with whom we work.
Over recent years we have seen developments in which we take particular pride:
- Reform of our Referral and Assessment Service leading to successful inspection outcomes.
- The establishment of an influential Children in Care Council.
- The transformation of our residential services with the creation of new and imaginative children’s home provision.
- Establishment of a ‘virtual School’ for children who are looked after.
- Continued commitment to professional development of our staff and managers resulting in improved services across social work teams.
- The establishment of multi-disciplinary early intervention teams which include some social work input.
- Despite financial pressures, the commitment of extra resources to our child in need and child protection service.
- A communication project for disabled children has been recognised as good practice by C4EO.
In Wolverhampton Children’s Social Care is part of an integrated Children and Families Service which covers early intervention and prevention as well as more complex cases.
Wolverhampton is fully committed to meeting the aspirations set by the Social Work Task Force and is an early adopter of the reform board employer standards. We are committed to the personal development of all our staff; through training and experience staff can progress smoothly from Level A to Level B and all social workers in mainstream social work teams can then progress directly to Senior Practitioner subject to assessment. The City Council has recognised the demands on social workers and has applied additional annual leave to all social work posts in teams for several years, more recently, and pending the introduction of Single Status, Wolverhampton has awarded additional increments to the same posts.
We offer a newly qualified social worker induction programme, as well as ongoing post qualifying opportunities and in-house training.

We are ambitious for the future and are committed to continually improving what we do. We would be interested in hearing from social workers or students who might join us making a difference to the lives of our children, young people and their families!
